Avoid Saying These Things in Interviews

As a recruiter and career coach, I’ve heard it all in and about interviewing – from the hilarious to the cringeworthy. At least that’s what I tell myself, but today is another day with new stories coming down the pike! 🤣

👋 Instead of the – “I’m going to let them know who I am” mindset, let’s focus on using the interview to make a great first impression.🌟 Here are some things you should NEVER say or reveal during a job interview, backed by statistics and expert advice! 📊

1️⃣”What does your company do?” 🤔 Employers want candidates who have done their homework. 47% of hiring managers say this shows a lack of preparation. (Source: The Balance Money)

2️⃣”My previous boss (or coworkers) was terrible!” 😡 Negative talk about past employers raises red flags. 33% of employers say it’s a major interview turn-off. (Source: Indeed)

3️⃣”I don’t have any weaknesses.” 😇 Everyone has weaknesses, and saying this makes you seem dishonest. Instead, discuss how you’re working on self-improvement in an area. Conversely, don’t dwell on your weaknesses or think you need to share a “fatal flaw”.

4️⃣”I need this job to pay my bills.” 💰 While it’s true for many, focusing on financial struggles can give the impression that you’re only interested in the paycheck. Hiring managers want to know that you’re passionate about the job and the company, not just a payday.

5️⃣”Sorry, I’m late.” ⏰ Arriving late to an interview is a big no-no. It suggests a lack of punctuality and respect for the interviewer’s time. Solution: don’t put yourself in a position where you have to apologize. Arrive early!

6️⃣”I’ll do anything for this job.” 🙏 Over eagerness can be perceived as desperation. Show enthusiasm but balance it with professionalism.

7️⃣”I’m not really a team player.” OR “I’m not really a people person.” 🙅‍♂️ Teamwork and communication skills are often essential. Instead, highlight your collaborative skills and how you contribute to a team’s success.

8️⃣”I have a personal emergency coming up.” 🚨 Save personal matters for later discussions. The interview is not the place to share such information. You don’t need to tell your interviewer about your family drama, your political views, or your religious beliefs.

9️⃣Don’t lie about your skills or experience🗣️💬: It’s tempting to embellish your resume a bit when you’re job searching, but it’s not worth the risk. If you’re caught lying in an interview, it’s most likely an automatic disqualification.

Remember, interviews are your chance to shine! Saying any of the above could result in shooting yourself in the foot. Show up on early, enthusiastic, prepared and ready to bring a positive message across about what you bring to this potential opportunity. 💼✨
