Gen Xers and Ageism

Never thought I would be writing a post about Gen Xers facing ageism at a much earlier age than previous generations. But here we are. 😳

As a member of Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, you may have been feeling the sting of ageism in the workplace. This often-overlooked generation is now facing challenges that were once associated with older workers. Let’s explore the impact of ageism on Gen Xers and discuss how to overcome these obstacles. 🤔

According to a recent BBC article, Gen Xers are experiencing ageism at a much earlier age than previous generations. This is particularly evident in the tech industry, where data from CompTIA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 56% of tech workers are between the ages of 25-44, while the same age range comprises 44% of the US Workforce as a whole. 📈

This ageism is not only affecting the careers of Gen Xers but also their mental health. A 2022 study by the AARP found that roughly 80% of workers aged 40 to 65 have experienced or witnessed age discrimination in the workplace, marking the highest number since the organization began tracking age discrimination. 😟

To combat ageism, Gen Xers (and anyone for that matter) must be proactive in showcasing their value to employers. This includes staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technology, as well as continuously developing new skills. Networking and maintaining a strong professional presence on platforms like LinkedIn can also help Gen Xers stay relevant and visible in their field. 💪👩‍💻👨‍💻

Additionally, companies must take responsibility for addressing ageism in the workplace. This can be achieved through implementing anti-discrimination policies, providing training to employees, and fostering a culture that values the experience and expertise of older workers. 👏

By staying informed, continuously developing their skills, and maintaining a strong professional presence, Gen Xers can overcome these challenges and continue to thrive in the workplace. Employers must also play their part in creating a workplace culture that values and supports workers of all ages. 🤝
