As a recruiter, I often speak with professionals & potential job seekers wrestling with guilt about leaving their roles, even when it’s clear a move is essential for career growth or personal well-being. This emotional tug-of-war is common, but clinging to loyalty can stall your career. Understanding yourself and this phenomenon is important in making empowered career decisions. 🤔

A 2025 Indeed study reveals 68% of employees feel guilty about resigning, citing loyalty to colleagues or fear of letting their team down, yet 74% of those who moved on reported higher job satisfaction (Indeed, 2025). Similarly, a 2024 SHRM report notes that 45% of workers hesitate to leave due to emotional ties, despite recognizing limited growth opportunities (SHRM, 2024). These stats highlight a critical truth: guilt can often overshadow the need for advancement. 📈

Feeling guilty is natural—strong workplace relationships foster a sense of duty. Especially with accounting and finance professionals. They tend to be a loyal bunch. 🐶

However, staying in a role that no longer aligns with your goals can lead to resentment, stagnation or worse – burnout. I advise job seekers to reframe thinking of their departure as a step toward growth, not abandonment. Managers and true mentors typically support employees advancing their careers. To help ease the transition, give ample notice, document processes, and express gratitude for your experiences. 🙏🏻

Career upward mobility is a strength. Update your LinkedIn, network proactively, and pursue roles that align with your ambitions. Don’t let guilt hold you back—embrace change to unlock your potential.
