You’re working hard to climb that career ladder and develop your career path. You’ve been stepping up, working late, volunteering for projects that arise and delivering results. You’ve been at the same level, title and pay for a while now, maybe it’s time to ask for a raise and/or promotion? But when you ask your supervisor, the feedback is vague or nonexistent. 😶🌫️
This is more common than you think. Lack of constructive feedback leads to uncertainty, stalled growth, and even disengagement. Yet senior-level professionals often feel stuck when they don’t know exactly where to improve. 🧢
Here’s how to proactively take control:
➡️ Know what you’re asking for. If you’re asking for a promotion – does the role you’re asking for even exist? Or is someone already in that role? If so – be prepared to suggest a work around.
➡️ Ask for specific direction. Instead of “How am I doing?” try, “What’s one skill or proficiency I could develop to be considered for the next level?”
➡️ Frame your journey as a partnership. Say, “I want to maximize my impact—could we schedule quarterly goal‑oriented check‑ins so we can compare how I am doing against my goals and milestones?”
➡️ Be prepared to review your “wins”. Share your achievements—project wins, revenue improvements, cost savings, process optimizations—and invite their perspective: “What other issues should I focus on?” Know your performance KPIs cold.
➡️ Build your feedback tribe. Tap into mentors, former managers, or peers for insight where your current boss is silent. But don’t be perceived as someone trying to work around their boss or accepted chain of command.
➡️ Create your own roadmap. If your manager won’t provide one, chart your path: define the next‑level competencies and start purposefully developing them.
By shifting from passive hope to active development, you can create upward momentum—and signal ownership. Advancing isn’t just about doing more—it’s about knowing what to do next and executing. 📈
Communication is key. If you’re waiting on feedback that seemingly never comes, start asking better questions. Because if you want to be a leader, the growth you define for yourself sometimes matters more than the feedback you receive. 📢
